DeKalb County Fiddlers' Convention to celebrate 105th year | Arts & Culture
The DeKalb County Fiddlers’ Convention is celebrating its 105th anniversary this year.
On August 3rd at 11 a.m., contestants at the DeKalb Theatre in Historic Downtown Fort Payne will compete for over $3,000 in nine categories as a part of the convention. The competition will also support the Arts in Education programs for Fort Payne area schools.
James McKinney, Fort Payne native, National Banjo Champion and Banjo Master, will be featured with his group “The Night Travelers" from Atlanta, GA.
The Big Wills Arts Council remains committed to holding the convention every year. The president of the council said the event “continues to draw contestants from throughout the tri-state area… To continue this convention is to preserve that tradition for future generations.”
Contestants can register beginning at 11 a.m. The contests begin at noon. Admission is only $8 for spectators and contestants and free for children under the age of ten. Admission includes entry into one contest category, with each additional category costing $8. Entry fees for the Bluegrass Band category will be a minimum of $32 for four band members or $8 per band member.
