Dekalb County Fiddler's Convention on Saturday

The 103rd Anniversary Celebration of the DeKalb County Fiddlers’ Convention is Saturday, August 6 starting at 11 a.m. at the Fort Payne Middle School on Martin Ave.

You can register when the gates open at 11 a.m. when the gates open. There will be over $3000 in prizes and trophies in nine categories.

Admission is $8 a person, and children under 10 are admitted free.

Big Wills Arts Council is the main sponsor for this event. If you have any questions, contact Russell Gulley at 256-845-2224.

Whether you go to compete or just to listen, this will be a fun time for you and your family.

Join the Fort Payne Film Society

The Fort Payne Film Society is a community gathering to watch films and have a good time with friends and family.

They will periodically have themed film festivals showing great movies at the beautiful and historic Dekalb Theatre. It is open to the public, everyone is invited (all ages), and it's free admission.

The first movie event will be August 19. Showing support for the local schools starting back, and with the upcoming school sporting events, this event will have a football theme.  The start times are 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Come for one, or stay for both.

Get ready for Music on the Mountain 2011

This year, Music on the Mountain is starting with a Jam Session on Friday, August 26, followed by the music festival Saturday, August 27.

Northeast Alabama Community College presents Music on the Mountain 2011, featuring Blue Moon Rising, with the Rigneys, Bent Creek, Newgrass Troubadours, Froggy Hollow, Cotton Mouth Creek, and Walker Street Opry. Tickets are $15, and you can get them by calling 256-638-4418 extension 248. It's FREE for NACC students!

Motor homes are welcome to the Jam Session on August 26 at 6 p.m., and the music begins August 27 at 1 p.m.

Campfire Talks are a series of educational & entertaining programs located in the great outdoors. Campfire programs are held almost every Friday & Saturday evening (May –October) in DeSoto’s James L. Wynn Campfire Ring in the Improved Campground.

DeKalb fiddlers convention celebrates 103rd anniversary

“Let the sound of the fiddle and the bow soothe the savage beast” reads an early advertisement for the DeKalb County Fiddlers’ Convention, and the sound is still ringing in the ears of lovers of traditional music today. That first note was played in 1908, and on August 6th 2011, 103 years later, contestants will gather at the Fort Payne Middle School to not only “Celebrate the Heritage” but to compete for over $3000 in prize money in 9 categories while supporting Arts In Education programs for Fort Payne City Schools.

Artists from across the Southeast will converge on Sweet Seasons Farm for Art at the Barn on May 7th.

The Spring art sale will feature works by regional artists and artisans. The festival is located on one of Alabama' oldest and largest sheep farms.
