WEATHER BLOG: Weather radio programming today

By Jeff Castle

The WAFF 48 Storm Team is going to be out programming your weather radios today.  We'll be at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville from 3pm until 7pm.  We will NOT have weather radios for sale at this location, so if you need a weather radio you'll need to pick one up ahead of time.  Bring those radios by our tent set up in the parking lot and we'll get them set up for you for free!

What A Weather Week?!

What A Weather Week?!

From Florence to Geraldine and everywhere in between... Thanks to everyone who helped during WAFF 48 Weather Week. We programmed over 500 weather radios. Wow! That’s 500 more people who are safer when severe weather strikes.

Did you miss our weather radio events? No worries... Stop by WAFF 48 during normal business hours. That's Monday-Friday 8am-5pm (excluding holidays.) We are more than happy to program your weather radio for FREE. (Pssst! We may still have tickets to an upcoming Huntsville Stars game. Ask our front desk receptionist for the hook-up.)

Stay in the know when you are on-the-go! Check out the WAFF 48 mobile app. Friend us on Facebook. Follow @waff48 on Twitter. Thank you for your support:)

Get up and move on National Walking Day

Fewer than 50-percent of adults get enough daily walking. This is a problem when you consider that physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease!

Exploring Little River paddle trip

Exploring Little River paddle trip

On March 9, 2013 National Park Ranger Larry Beane will lead a paddle trip in the backcountry part of the preserve. This section of Little River is known for easy paddling with class I and II rapids. The all day trip is scheduled 10 am to 4 pm. The trip will include stops along the way to learn about safety and special resources in the park.

Paddlers will need to bring their own kayak/canoe, paddle, life preservers, food, water, hat and sunscreen. The water will probably be cold, and the weather may be cool too, so plan your clothing accordingly. A splash jacket and warm cloths may be needed. The park is planning on providing free shuttle for this event.

Call the National Park Service office at (256) 845-9605 or email Ranger Beane at Larry_Beane@nps.gov for more information or to RSVP. Although the program is free, RSVP is required. Time and meeting place will be given at that time.

Free waterfall hike in DeSoto State Park

Join DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon National Preserve staff for a fun day of hiking on March 2, 2013.  This free hike lasts from 10 am - 2 pm.  Visitors should meet park staff at the DeSoto State Park Country Store.

Come on out and burn those calories while enjoying the Great Outdoors! See waterfalls with cool names like Lost Falls, Laurel Falls and Indian Falls on this leisurely walk.  Stops along this trail include unusual plants, winter and early spring foliage.

Bring good walking shoes (open toe shoes are not recommended), plenty of drinking water, snacks or lunch, clothing appropriate for the weather and your camera.  With all the rain, the waterfalls will be flowing and great for taking pictures.
