Operation safe holidays

Alabama state troopers kicked off "Operation Safe Holidays" Friday to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities throughout the remainder of 2010 and to help ensure safe holiday travel into the new year, according to Col. F.A. Bingham, acting director of the Department of Public Safety.

Bingham said motorists can expect to see significantly greater numbers of troopers patrolling Alabama's roadways, with approximately 175 additional troopers and Capitol Police officers bolstering enforcement efforts throughout the intensive safety campaign. DPS is conducting the extended campaign, which runs Dec. 10 through Jan. 2, 2011, in partnership with the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and the Alabama Department of Transportation.

Christmas parade

Christmas parade

The Fort Payne Christmas parade and Christmas in the park will be held on Friday, December 10th.  Events will be held in the Fort Payne City Park.

There will be free soft drinks, hot chocolate, refreshments, caroling and then the parade!

Festivities start at 4pm and the parade starts at 6pm.

Cotton patch gospel

The Cotton Patch Gospel will be held at the DeKalb Theatre Saturday, December 11th at 6pm and Sunday, December 12th at 5pm.

The DeKalb Theatre is located at 306 Gault Avenue North in Fort Payne.  The event is sponsored by the Big Wills Art Council.

Benefit for arts in eduation program

The Big Wills Arts Council will present two performances of the acclaimed musical, "Cotton Patch Gospel", as a fundraiser for the arts in education program in Fort Payne City Schools. "Cotton Patch Gospel", the last work of the famous folksinger, Harry Chapin, is the story of Christ told from a "Southern" perspective with a Bluegrass and Folk Music soundtrack.

The event will be held Saturday, December 11th at 6PM and Sunday, December12th at 2PM at the historic DeKalb Theatre in Fort Payne.

Wills Creek Pow-Wow

The Public is invited to bring the family for a Native American weekend!

Help celebrate Native American month in the modern day Lower Village of Red-Headed Will!

The Wills Creek Pow-Wow will be held November 13th & 14th, Rain Or Shine!
The event will be held at the VFW Agriculture Fairgrounds Building at 135 18th Street Northeast in Ft. Payne.

Great American smokeout

The American Cancer Society is marking the 35th Great American Smokeout on November 18th by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day.

By doing so, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life – one that can lead to reducing cancer risk. To have the best chance of quitting successfully, you need to know what you're up against, what your options are, and where to go for help.

WAFF 48 Heart of the Valley Can-a-thon
