Little River Canyon to lead river tour

Little River Canyon will host a trip down the easy paddling section of Little River.

Park Ranger Larry Bean will lead the group. Participants can used kayaks or canoes.

This area of the river is class one and two at normal paddling levels.  The unusually low water for this time of the year will create some portages. The trip is likely to last all day. It will include stops along the way to learn about safety and special resources in the park.

The trip will be April 28. Paddlers will need to bring their own boat, paddle, life preservers, food, water, hat and sunscreen.

Little River Canyon National Preserve will offer free admission to Canyon Mouth Picnic area during National Park Week.

The rest of Little River Canyon National Preserve does not have a charge.

National Park Week is April 21-29.

Learn to build a bluebird house

Little River Canyon Center will offer a class on building bluebird houses.

The class will be April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Pre-registartion is required. The class costs $15.

Little River Canyon offers wildflower walk

Little River Canyon offers wildflower walk

Little River Canyon National Preserve in Fort Payne will hold a wildflower walk Saturday April 14.

The two mile loop will be on the Beaver Pond Trail and last about two hours.

Ranger Larry Beane will lead the walk.

"Wildflowers are blooming early. Many rare plants inhabit this rocky overlook. As spring warms up, some of the wildflowers will have gone to seed and new ones emerge to replace them," said Beane. “We hope to see one of the two carnivorous plants and possibly the rare Little River Onion on Saturday.”

Little River Canyon Center offers tracking class

The Little River Canyon Center will offer a class on skat, tracks and signs.

The class will educate on determing what animal was present, what they ate and where they came from.

The class will be April 14 at 10 a.m. It will take place in the B-side campground pavilion.

DeSoto State Park to host hike

DeSoto State Park to host hike

DeSoto State Park will offer an early spring hike.

The hike will be Saturday April 14 starting at 10 a.m. and lasting until noon.

It is free to the community.
