Social media boosts cat adoption efforts

Social media boosts cat adoption efforts

By Elijah Merrill

From The Daily Cat
Arriving at the Facebook page for "Pets on Death Row" is heartbreaking. "I get the euth list every night from Animal Care & Control (AC&C) and post it on Facebook," says Kay Smith, a New York City animal activist who runs the page. "There are always so many cats -- 25 to 30 -- and if no one steps up, they all get killed the next day."

Smith's page is just one example of how social media is gradually transforming the process of rescuing and adopting animals. Her project is very local in that it only posts info about cats in New York City shelters.

Is your dog suffering from fall allergies?

Is your dog suffering from fall allergies?

By Dr. Jessica Vogelsang
From The Dog Daily

In the autumn, falling leaves and dried-out weeds release clouds of irritating particulate matter into the air, right where your dog is waiting to inhale them. As pets move indoors to escape the cold, mite allergies may develop.

Dogs trap allergens in their extensive sinuses. Fur is also a natural magnet for dust and particles, which means that your dog could be covered -- inside and out -- in triggering pollens. Add to that a warm autumn where the fleas are still around and you have one unhappy dog.

Dog allergies manifest in several ways, but the symptom most commonly recognized by owners is itching.

Pets are a key source of social and emotional support for their owners, whether they are "everyday" people or those facing serious health problems, a news study finds.

"We observed evidence that pet owners fared better, both in terms of well-being outcomes and individual differences, than non-owners on several dimensions," said lead researcher Allen R. McConnell, of Miami University in Ohio.

"Specifically, pet owners had greater self-esteem, were more physically fit, tended to be less lonely, were more conscientious, were more extroverted, tended to be less fearful and tended to be less preoccupied than non-owners," McConnell added.
