Due to the damage and the forecast for more storms, Jackson County Schools will be closed Wednesday, April 27th.

Bullied kids showing up in school nurses' offices

Elementary school children who were victims of peer bullying -- along with the bullies themselves -- made more frequent visits to a school nurse's office with complaints of physical illnesses and injuries than their other classmates, according to new research out of Kansas.

"The message is, a child might be getting frequent stomachaches from being picked on," said Eric Vernberg, lead author of the study and director of the Child and Family Services Clinic at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

The research, published in the May issue of Pediatrics, revealed a useful strategy for detecting aggressive interactions among children that may otherwise go recognized, added Vernberg.

Classroom envirnment may affect kids' mental health

First-grade classrooms with poor environments -- not enough resources, teachers who feel disrespected by colleagues -- have been linked to a higher number of mental health problems in students, according to a new study.

The study doesn't prove that classrooms that face more challenges directly cause mental health problems in kids. However, "being in a classroom with a lack of resources might adversely impact children's mental health because children are frustrated or disheartened by their surroundings," said study lead author Melissa A. Milkie, a sociology professor at the University of Maryland.

Former coach pleads guilty to rape

A north Alabama former volunteer football coach has pleaded guilty to 2nd degree rape and sexual abuse.

WAFF 48 news was in the court room when Christopher Richey admitted to the crime. His victim was a girl under the age of 16.

Richey will serve 3 years in prison and five on probation.

Richey served as a volunteer football coach at Geraldine High School.

School closing

DeKalb County schools and administration offices will be closed Friday, January 14th. Fort Payne City Schools will be closed Friday as well, however, the school administration offices will open at 9am.
