Join DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon National Preserve staff for a fun day of hiking on March 2, 2013.  This free hike lasts from 10 am - 2 pm.  Visitors should meet park staff at the DeSoto State Park Country Store.

Come on out and burn those calories while enjoying the Great Outdoors! See waterfalls with cool names like Lost Falls, Laurel Falls and Indian Falls on this leisurely walk.  Stops along this trail include unusual plants, winter and early spring foliage.

Bring good walking shoes (open toe shoes are not recommended), plenty of drinking water, snacks or lunch, clothing appropriate for the weather and your camera.  With all the rain, the waterfalls will be flowing and great for taking pictures.

Scientists study black bear population

Scientists study black bear population

Biologists in North Alabama are studying the state’s black bear population to better understand their dynamics.

Until recently, black bears were common across Alabama but are now relegated to small areas north of Mobile.

Officials believe there may only be 50 bears in that area, but recently black bears have been seen in northeast Alabama.

Officials believe the bears have been migrating from Georgia and Tennessee to more suitable habitats in DeKalb and Cherokee counties.

Scientists from Auburn University, Jacksonville State, and ADCNR’s Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries are working cooperatively to understand how many bears there are, where they reside, what habitats they use and correlations to bear populations in other states.
